There is no single student hotel discount. What exists is three separate things that get lumped together, and telling them apart is most of the value here:
The Broadest One Almost Nobody Uses
Wyndham's Dolce Education rate has the widest eligibility wording we have seen on any hotel discount. In Wyndham's own words, it is available to:
"Faculty, Staff, Students, Alumni, Athletes, Parents, and anyone visiting a College or University."
Read that last clause again. Anyone visiting a college or university. Not employed by one, not enrolled at one. Visiting.
Wyndham gives two ways to get it: look for the "Education" rate on the Rooms & Rates page, or book with promotional code EDU. Wyndham does not publish a percentage, so compare it against the rate you would otherwise pay.

The One That Surprises University Staff
If you work for a state university, you may already qualify for IHG's government rate, not a student rate. IHG's terms say so directly:
"All government employees (federal, state, county, local governments), Military personnel, Defense or Cost Reimbursable Contractors (CRCs) and State-funded higher education universities and healthcare facilities qualify for Government rate."
State-funded universities are named in the same sentence as federal employees. So are state-funded healthcare facilities, which catches a lot of university hospital staff.
Two conditions attach:
Unlike the military rate, IHG's government rate is not restricted to leisure travel. It is aimed at business travel, which is what most university trips are. Our government hotel rates page covers the wider government picture, including FedRooms.
Choice Hotels, With A Caveat
Choice offers a student discount to post-secondary students through free Choice Privileges membership. We are not quoting a percentage because Choice's own student page does not state one, and figures circulating elsewhere are not traceable to it.
Sign up for Choice Privileges first, since the discount is tied to membership rather than to a code.
Your Own University's Rate Is Usually Better
The three above are open to everyone with the right affiliation. The deepest rates are the ones your institution negotiated itself, and those are not on any aggregator because each one belongs to a single university.

Case Western including alumni and Florida State including campus visitors are the striking ones. Those are not employment tests, and if you fit the wording the institution published, you are within its terms.

How to Find Your Own Institution's Rate
This is a five-minute job and it is worth doing before any trip on university business.

Where a university has published one openly with wording that covers you, using it is exactly what the publication is for. Where the wording does not cover you, the rate can be repriced at check-in, and university rates are checked more often than corporate ones because institutional ID is easy to ask for.
What About Booking Sites Aimed At Students
Several booking platforms market student rates. Those are agency discounts rather than chain rates, they generally do not earn hotel loyalty points, and the cancellation terms are usually stricter than a chain member rate. Worth comparing, not worth assuming.

Is there a student discount code for hotels?
Wyndham publishes one: promotional code EDU for its Dolce Education rate. Most other chains handle student and education rates as a rate you select at booking rather than a code you type, and Choice ties its student discount to free Choice Privileges membership.
Can university staff use a government rate?
At IHG, yes. IHG's government rate terms name state-funded higher education universities as qualifying, alongside federal, state, county and local government employees. Official ID or work orders are required at check-in.
Do alumni get hotel discounts?
Sometimes, and it depends entirely on the institution. Case Western's published IHG rate covers students, employees and alumni. Most institutional rates do not extend that far, so read the wording your own institution published.
Is my university's negotiated rate better than a chain student rate?
Usually, when one exists. Institutional rates are negotiated against actual travel volume, whereas an education rate is a public offer. The catch is that many institutional rates are restricted to business travel.
Can I use the EDU code if I do not work at or attend a university?
Wyndham's stated eligibility includes "anyone visiting a College or University", so a campus visit is within its own wording. As with any rate, the property can ask what the basis is.
Do these rates earn loyalty points?
Chain rates normally do, including IHG's government rate and Wyndham's education rate. Agency-booked student rates on third-party platforms often do not.
