How to claim: select a hotel property and follow booking directions on their website. Then, have your AARP membership card handy to show hotel staff at check-in.Membership: $15 for your first year when you sign up for Automatic Renewal

Most hotel discount lists you will find are employer codes: useful only if you happen to work for the company that negotiated them. The AARP hotel benefit is different in the way that matters most. It is a membership discount, which means the qualification is something you can go and obtain rather than something you either have or do not.

The table above is every brand AARP lists on its own benefits page, with the discount exactly as AARP words it. Two things about that list are worth knowing before you plan around it.

The Big Four Are Not On It

AARP's hotel programme does not include Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt or IHG. Not one brand from any of them appears on the list.

This surprises people, because AARP's discount is so widely mentioned that it gets assumed to be universal. What AARP actually has is deep coverage of the midscale and economy tiers and nothing at all in the upper-upscale and luxury tiers those four chains dominate.

So if your trip is a Courtyard, a Hampton Inn, a Hyatt Place or a Holiday Inn Express, the AARP card does nothing for you at the booking stage. You need a different route entirely, and the corporate and public rate pages on this site cover those chains separately.

What It Does Cover, And How Deeply

The 62 brands break down into a small number of parent groups, and the discount is set per group rather than per brand:

Parent chain Brands listed AARP discount
Wyndham2010% or more off the standard rate
Choice Hotels1310% off the best available rate
Best Western125% or more off the best available rate
Radisson910% off the best available rate
Red Roof410% off the best available rate
Motel 6 / Studio 6210%-12% off the best available rate

Two entries sit outside that pattern. Preferred Hotels & Resorts gives bonus loyalty points and an upgraded reward tier rather than a rate cut, and the AARP Travel Center powered by Expedia offers up to 10% off select hotels, which is an agency booking rather than a chain rate.

Best Western is the weakest of the group at 5%, and it is worth noting because Best Western is often the brand people reach for first. Wyndham and Choice are twice that.

Does the Membership Pay For Itself

AARP states the cost as "$15 for your first year when you sign up for Automatic Renewal". Against a 10% discount, that is recovered on roughly $150 of hotel spend, which is one or two nights at most of the brands on this list.

That arithmetic is unusually favourable, and it is the reason this benefit is worth more to most readers than any employer code on this site. An employer code you are not entitled to may be repriced at the front desk. A membership you actually hold cannot be.

The caveat is the one above: if your travel is concentrated in Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt or IHG properties, the maths never starts, because none of them participate.

How to Claim It

AARP's own instruction is short. In its words, you "select a hotel property and follow booking directions on their website. Then, have your AARP membership card handy to show hotel staff at check-in."

In practice that means:

  • Start from AARP's hotel benefits page rather than the chain's homepage, so the AARP rate is applied to your search
  • Book the AARP or senior rate that appears, not the standard rate
  • Bring the membership card. This is a rate tied to a verifiable membership, and the front desk is entitled to ask for it
  • No code to type. Unlike a corporate rate, there is nothing to enter in a Special Rates box. If a page is offering you an "AARP code", treat that as a sign the page does not know how the programme works.

Where This Sits Against the Other Public Rates

AARP is one of several discounts that need no employer relationship. The practical comparison:

  • AARP covers 62 midscale and economy brands at 5-10%, needs a paid membership, and excludes the four largest chains
  • AAA and CAA cover a broader range of chains including the big four, also need a paid membership, and typically land in a similar percentage range
  • Government and military rates are deeper but require genuine eligibility and are checked
  • Advance purchase rates need no membership at all and are frequently lower than any of the above, at the cost of being non-refundable
  • The honest advice is to check the advance purchase rate before assuming a membership discount wins. On flexible dates it often does not.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an AARP hotel discount code?

No. The programme works by selecting the AARP or member rate during booking and showing your card at check-in. There is no code to enter, which is why lists of "AARP hotel codes" elsewhere are not describing this programme.

Does AARP work at Marriott or Hilton?

Not through the AARP hotel benefit. Neither chain, nor Hyatt or IHG, appears on AARP's list of participating brands. Those chains have their own senior and public rates that are separate from AARP.

Which chain gives AARP members the biggest discount?

By AARP's own wording, Motel 6 and Studio 6 at 10-12%, followed by the Wyndham brands at 10% or more. Best Western is the shallowest of the major groups at 5% or more.

Can I combine an AARP rate with a corporate code?

No. These are alternative rate plans on the same booking, so you pick whichever is lower rather than stacking them. Compare both before you confirm.

Do AARP rates still earn loyalty points?

Booked through the chain's own channels they normally do, since the AARP rate is a published rate rather than an opaque one. Confirm on the reservation before assuming it.

    Sourcing

Every brand and discount figure on this page is taken from AARP's own hotel benefits page, which is linked in the table above. The wording is AARP's, not a paraphrase, because "10% or more off the standard rate" and "10% off the best available rate" are different promises and the distinction disappears if you round both to "10%".

Brands absent from this page are absent from AARP's list. Discounts change without notice, so confirm the rate at booking.
